Igniting change through human connection: Unveiling the brighter side of social media
Social media has been a controversial yet expanding realm across generations, especially during recent years with new platforms continuously created. For some, these platforms are stress-inducing, overstimulating, information-dense, and undesired, yet for others, these platforms serve a multitude of purposes including connecting them to others, amplifying their voice, and allowing them rapid access to new information and knowledge.
Both sides of the debate prove to be valid, and I want to especially hone in on the future of social media and how if harnessed correctly, it can set motion to waves of positivity. With user and brand awareness, social media can become a hub for problem-solving, learning, and understanding, and this is why…
Interconnectivity
It is no secret that social media has changed our social network structure and opened up new avenues for two-way communication among individuals. With this, we are hearing from and seeing individuals whom we would have otherwise had no communication with, helping us to feel understood and active in the world. This was especially prevalent during the recent COVID-19 pandemic as individuals were itching for human connection during quarantine times. During this time, social media became an expressive sanctuary for many and allowed individuals to stay in touch with those in their inner circle while also expanding their relationship base.
Without outlets like social media platforms, events like the pandemic could have easily become devastatingly isolating, triggering bigger mental implications such as anxiety and depression among those who felt completely alone and hopeless. Yet, social media was able to provide a soft cushion for these individuals to aid in the burden of new pandemic norms.
Amplified Voices
Speaking of mental health issues and awareness, social media has also become essential in amplifying voices and spreading awareness about various common topics and struggles, mental health being one. These platforms have given all individuals the ability to become producers, saying whatever is on their minds. This has fostered feelings of hope and freedom as social media has been a catalyst of the movement of self-expression and truly given voices to the previously voiceless.
With this, levels of empowerment have risen, with individuals speaking up on causes and topics they care about, frequently being able to easily connect with those who share those interests and passions.
Rapid Spread and Sharing of Information
Lastly, social media has become a news and information-sharing source, with citizens reporting on their own experiences. This has allowed others to have access to immediate information, many times before they appear on credited news sources. Examples of this include international conflicts, natural disasters, brand controversies, and more.
This has put the power back in the hands of individuals rather than in large monopolies which has provided checks and balances regarding power distribution. This has additionally aided in individuals not being silenced and feeling increasingly comfortable sharing their truths with the world.
Future Opportunities
Between the fact that social media creates a community, rooted in interconnectivity, along with its ability to amplify voices and share information promptly, it truly has the power to ignite and spread good. As long as censorship is limited, self-expression is encouraged, and kindness and understanding are practiced, there is no reason why these platforms can’t be positive and used to advance and better all aspects of society.
